More Networking Tips
(This is a continuation of networking tips provided on our page, Small Business Milwaukee Networking Events.
In-Person Networking
Have a Purpose—but Stay Open
Know what you’re hoping to get out of the event (connections, ideas, visibility), but allow space for unexpected conversations and opportunities.
Bring Business Cards or a Digital Contact Option
Even in today’s digital world, having a simple way to exchange info (card, QR code, or LinkedIn app) makes follow-up easy and professional.
Practice Your Introduction
Keep it short, natural, and relatable. Aim for something like:
“I help local pet owners keep their pets healthy without breaking the bank.”
Instead of: “I’m the founder and CEO of a pet-based service solutions company.”
Make Room for Others in Conversations
If you notice someone standing nearby or alone, welcome them in. It’s not only kind—it shows leadership.
Follow Up Within 48 Hours
Send a short email or message thanking them for the conversation—and include a note mentioning what you talked about to jog their memory.
Be Yourself
You don’t need to perform. Authenticity is far more powerful than a polished pitch.
Give Before You Get
If you can offer a resource, referral, or kind word—do it. Generosity creates stronger and longer-lasting connections.
OnLine Networking
Prepare a Quick Intro
Have a short, clear “here’s what I do” ready. Keep it conversational and benefit-focused:
“I help busy parents eat healthier without the overwhelm.”
Be Present & Engaged
Nod, smile, and react appropriately—these non-verbal cues still matter online and show that you’re paying attention.
Use the Chat Strategically
Drop your website or social link (when appropriate), give encouragement, and share quick tips or resources when relevant.
Write Down Names & Key Details
Keep a notepad nearby. Jot down people you’d like to follow up with or who might be a good collaboration opportunity.
Send a Friendly Follow-Up
After the event, send a quick LinkedIn request or email saying, “Great meeting you during today’s session—would love to stay in touch!”
Be Consistent
The more often you show up, the more familiar and trustworthy you become. Don’t worry if you don’t make instant connections—they build over time.
