Not every day does one meet a Chief Bread Officer who has a smile as bright as Jeff DeSmidt’s. It helped seal the deal when I was deciding whom to select as a caterer for a small April party I was hosting.
The first thing that drew me to Bake Street Cafe, however, was one little menu item posted on its website. It was, “Tea Sandwich Brunch.” That was exactly what I was looking for, so I called and arranged a quick meeting with Jeff.
Walking into his small store front from a back office, he was so affable in his greeting that I was immediately put at ease. Five minutes after setting my party context for him, he was sketching out a menu. We tweaked it a little bit and this is what we decided upon:
Tea Sandwiches: Tomato & Pesto, Turkey & Swiss and Hummus & Veggie
Vegan Spring Rolls with Spicy Peanut Sauce
Cheese
Fruit
While I was off getting married, Jeff delivered the food to our home. When we newlyweds and our small bridal party walked through the front door and into the dining room, everything was ready for us. Jeff had created a beautiful presentation, adorning the platter with lovely fresh flowers. Delicious? You bet. Reasonably priced? I was so very pleased.

Jeff was kind enough to provide me with several cards for free coffee at his bake house. My husband and I will take Jeff up on his offer very soon. Perhaps some lovely summer Sunday morning when we’ll also try Bake Street Cafe’s award-winning morning buns (voted best in Wisconsin).
I pulled for you a little bit from BakeStreetCafe.com that I hope will encourage you to stop by Jeff’s place in Brookfield where you, too, can experience his really good food and wonderful charm.
We’re a scratch bake house specializing in tailored catering, breads, pastries, signature sandwiches and salads. We make everything by hand, with care, and the freshest locally sourced seasonal meats and produce.
